Annulohypoxylon query
Steve Clements, 19-07-2015 13:15
Hi,
This Hypoxylon-like stromatic ascomycete was on a hardwood log in mixed woodland – including Oak, Birch, Beech, Sycamore, Pine, Rowan. Although Annulohypoxylon multiforme was also found on Birch close by, this fungus looked too effused and spreadiing to be that. I used a BMS key and Field Mycology articles which seemed to suggest either Annulohypoxylon cohaerens or multiforme (ostioles papillate).
The KOH-extracted pigment looked somewhat greenish-brown using an LED microsope, but using Geoff Kibby's Russula colour chart as a reference shows it to be dark brown.
Thickness of the stroma was about 2mm.
Spores dropped were 9-12 x 4-5. I was unsure whether the germ-slit was full-lenght or not – my microscope is probably not good enough to show this.
Asci approx 15 x 5-6, blueing in Lugol, 8 spores, uniseriate.
Paraphyses not clear.
Is this simply a rather resupinate form of Annulohypoxylon multiforme?
Cheers,
Steve

Re : Annulohypoxylon query
Hi Steve,
as you suspected this is most likely an effused form of A. multiforme. Pulvinate stromata occur most often on bark while effused stromata are not uncomon on decorticated wood. The same occurs for H. fuscum or H. macrocarpum, which is often misleading.
Cheers,
Jacques
