Sphaerobolus look alike
Malcolm Greaves, 03-02-2017 19:13
Malcolm GreavesCan someone help with this small asco on the underside of the bark of a fallen branch.
It is very much like Sphaerobolus stellatus in shape with its outer surface opening to reveal the hymenium. The spores are club shaped, look granular and have up to 7 septa.
Thanks
Mal

Re : Sphaerobolus look alike
Hi Mal,

that looks like a Karstenia, e.g. K. rhopaloides.

Best wishes,
Gernot

Re : Sphaerobolus look alike
Yes, it is K. rhopaloides. The hymenium must be hemiamyloid.

Strong blue reaction when mounted in KOH and then Lugol.
Thanks Gernot and Zotto
