Mollisia fusca on a polypore?
François Bartholomeeusen, 11-04-2019 09:08
Dear forum members,

FRBs found on the hymenium of a polypore (Piptoporus betulum). The substrate was still attached to the birch. The diameter of the ascomata are smaller than 1 mm.
Using my information I determine this asco as Mollisia fusca.
Is that correct? The dimensions of the spores are not completely correct and the substrate must be wood according to the key.
Thank you in advance for your help.

Best regards

François

M. fusca as I understand has longer spores. Did you test KOH whether a yellow sap extrudes?

Hi Zotto,

I forgot to mention, the reaction in 5% KOH was immediate lemon-yellow.

M. fusca seems actually a big problem because the available sequences are very diverse.

In seemingly typical collections the spores are often 10-14 µm long. And the subicular hyphae were rather wide (3-5 µm).
