Hymenoscyphus-like on various debris

These small pinkish, stalked apothecia were growing on various debris in wet, unstable soil in subalpine region. Various debris include soil, rock fragment, Betula nana leave, Juncus stem, and moss. Spores measure 11-13 x 5-6 um (water). Asci 110-120 um long. IKI-. Ascus apex not thickened at maturity and appearing "operculate" with spores in direct contact with the apex wall. Paraphyses multiguttulate, slightly yellowish in water.

This must be Gloeotinia juncorum. Not frequent, and unclear in respect to G. aschersoniana which is morphologically very similar. A case for DNA-research. I doubt that the apos grew on anything else than Juncus.

I think you are absolutely right. I guess the mummified fruits must be totally degraded, but I will definitely take a closer look. Does G. aschersoniana solely infect Carex?

Yes, G. aschersoniana is only known from Carex, I remember. And the Apos are ,more whitish-cream instead of yellow.

I have now carefully dissected the material and yes, all apothecia are on more or less degraded seeds. I have determined that the seeds are fom Juncus biglumis (one of the seeds/apothecia was still attached to a plant, which I brought home along with the collection).
