Black Discomycete/discolichen on/near pine resin?
James Mitchell,

I was looking at a specimen collected in the 1880s in northern Norway and found some small black apothecia I could not identify. Macroscopically, they are small uniformly black apothecia with a distinct margin and a rough/granular hymenium. I have tried to key it out as a lichen, a bitunicate fungus, and as an inoperculate discomycete but I have so far not gotten anywhere.
I have some photos I took of it here: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1foXy7nKWaB_Y1yUu_gr3_rCWxy2Tui8y
Photos are of 15 um sections cut on a freezing microtome after rehydrating the specimen in water. The mounting medium is water unless stated otherwise in the file name.
I think this might be a nonlichenized fungus in the Lecanoromycetes, due to the (pale) amyloid reaction in the hymenium and the lack of a thallus or associated algae. The apothecia do not seem to be associated with any of the other fungi on the specimen, either. The few spores I could find out of asci in the IKI mount are roughly 30 x 3 um and 6-7 septate. If any other preparations would be helpful, I can take more pictures. I am reluctant to be too destructive with the specimen, though, as it is a type.
Thank you,
James Mitchell

With me the link works. Did you use Melzer's or Lugol? Any photo in iodine? Is this the type or an fungus associated with the type?

OK it works if you copy/paste the link in an explorer.

Re : Black Discomycete/discolichen on/near pine resin?
I used Lugol's Iodine. It is a fungus associated with the type, but in an immature state (without spores) it could have been considered part of the type by the collector.
Are there any other pictures you would like me to take in iodine?
