Mollisia 'atlantica' nom.prov. A.Gminder?
William Slosse, 12-03-2021 16:34
William SlosseHello everyone,

on 05/03/21 I collected a collection of Mollisia on Salix wood in the Plaatsduinen, Oostduinkerke.
I think this is again 'atlantica'. This species appears to be widely distributed here in the dune area of the Belgian Westcoast.
Can this determination be confirmed?

° Exipulum dark brown to black
Hymenium mouse gray with a lighter colored edge
° Asci J+
° Spores:
- Av (8.89) 9.51 (10.60) x (2.25) 2.49 (2.88)
- N = 15
- 1-septated in asci

Mvg, William

Hi William

this may well be. But as often written by me, you need to study living asci and only when you see septate spores in quantity inside the living asci, then we can be sure.

Thanks for the feedback Zotto.
I only studied asci from fresh material in water (following your previous advices) and noticed the septated spores. With this I assumed that this could be 'atlantica'.
Do additional things need to be investigated to confirm 'Atlantica'? Is a certain percentage of septated spores expected?
Or is the material I researched perhaps not as fresh as I assumed?
Thank you in advance for your advice.

William

I am sorry to tell but your asci are all dead, and living spores I saw only inside the red circle.

I assume you applied pressure. Try a secion with a razor blade and avoid any pressure.
