Scutellinia hyperborea?
Karl Soler Kinnerbäck, 12-03-2025 17:54
Hi all!
Do you agree with Scutellinia hyperborea?
Padjelanta national park, Sweden, alpine heath next to stream, 1000 m elevation, 2024-08.

Hairs 300-400 x 15-20, some bifurcated
Spores 17-18 x 16-18, fairly regularly ornamented with low warts
Measurements from dried material. Spores are smaller than in Schumachers description, otherwise I think it is a good fit.

Best regards
Karl

Re : Scutellinia hyperborea?
I would also compare with S minor

Re : Scutellinia hyperborea?
I also have a collection (from the Alps) which I am not sure if it is hyperborea or minor. What are the most important diagnostic differences?

Re : Scutellinia hyperborea?
I think the major difference is that in S hyperborea the warts are generally smaller and have a much more uniform size. S minor has more unevenly sized warts spread over the spore surface. The few clear photos of the spores of this find look to fit better with this latter criteria.

thank you, Malcolm! This will help me when I take a closer look at my collection. Your contribution motivates me to do this quite soon :-)

Re : Scutellinia hyperborea?
Hi Malcolm and Lothar!
Yes, as I also understood it the warts are somewhat higher and more heterogenous in minor. When I compared with literature I was almost certain it was hyperborea, but if you are leaning towards minor I will study the collection again. I will soon have better equipment and try some photo stacking. Thanks Malcolm

Re : Scutellinia hyperborea?
I do not recognize S. minor on these pictures.
As a reminder, there is a key to European Scutellinia available here: https://doi.org/10.25664/KEY-0008

Re : Scutellinia hyperborea?
Would your suggestion be hyperborea then Nicolas?

Re : Scutellinia hyperborea?
Hi all,

New pictures have been taken by Roger Andersson, what do you think? Are they helpful with identification?

Additional spore measurments: 16-18,6

Re : Scutellinia hyperborea?
I have no experience with S. hyperborea, but the spores of S. minor have a much more heterogeneous ornamentation, like in the attached picture.
Using the above key, I would choose S. hyperborea.

Re : Scutellinia hyperborea?
Hi Marek!

Thanks for the input. I used the key for my original suggestion of S hyperborea as well.

Best regards
