Teleomorph of Dendrostilbella smaragdina ?
Francois Guay, 29-08-2025 05:16
Francois Guay
I think I may have found the teleomorph of Dendrostilbella smaragdina.

It was growing on decaying conifer wood, next to the Dendrostilbella smaragdina anamorph.

Spores: 5.8–8.95 × 2.92–3.58 µm

Asci: 8-spored, IKI+, with croziers

Here is the iNaturalist link for photos: https://www.inaturalist.ca/observations/309564369

Has anyone else seen this species?

Thanks!

Very interesting case! I read in Seifert

that he wanted to describe the teleomorph in Claussenomyces.

In GenBank I find several iNaturalist ITS sequences of D. smaragdina which give this Blast result:

ITS: 97.3% Dendrostilbella sp. CA01, 94% Phialocephala virens, 90% Clauss. kirschsteinianus.

I will do a phylotree with these and come back soon.

Here is now the interesting result. With strong support D. smaragnida falls in a clade with what I call Resinomyces. But this group has always inamyloid asci, so I doubt if your fungus is the teleomorph.

Re : Teleomorph of Dendrostilbella smaragdina ?
Very interesting! Thanks, Zotto, for making this phylotree. This fungus could be something else entirely. I have seen another observation of D. smaragdina with these teal asco right next to it. Based on the microscopy, do you have any idea what genus it could be? I am sending it for sequencing and will keep you updated.

Re : Teleomorph of Dendrostilbella smaragdina ?
Oh you saw it twice! My idea was a Hyphodiscaceae, but that is a pure guess. Hyphodiscus smaragdinus has a somehow similar colour but of course tuberculate hairs.

Re : Teleomorph of Dendrostilbella smaragdina ?
Nice! It does look very similar to some Hyphodiscaceae. Thank you, Zotto, now we just need to wait for the DNA sequencing results!

Re : Teleomorph of Dendrostilbella smaragdina ?
Hi Zotto,
I got the sequencing results back for this species. It was sequenced using Nanopore technology, and I used only a single fruiting body in a microtube for extraction. It matches 100% with several D. smaragdina sequences, so it seems to indeed be the teleomorph of D. smaragdina!

here is the blast: https://mycomap.com/genetics/blast-search/hfsont54_its4-6_64_a8-dik-fg01-fg0313-inat309564369-hyphodiscaceae_-1-ric325-517558-r402290/

Re : Teleomorph of Dendrostilbella smaragdina ?
Great! So the connection is proved. Now the question is, if there exists an old description of the teleomorph.

How does whit MycoBLAST work? I opened the site but see no window to paste a sequence.

Re : Teleomorph of Dendrostilbella smaragdina ?
Hi Zotto,
I asked Keith Seifert whether it corresponds to the teleomorph he was referring to in his paper. I'll let you know once I hear back from him.

The MycoMap BLAST that I shared already shows the BLAST results from both NCBI and the MycoMap local database. If you want to run a new BLAST, you can click on MycoBLAST Search, and on the next page, on the right-hand side, click "Add New MycoBLAST."

Re : Teleomorph of Dendrostilbella smaragdina ?
This worked, great thanks! I tested it with my present project, Calycina albosanguinea, and got a 99.8% hit on iNat 188663364. How is it possible to retrieve the data from this find, even the sequence is not there.

Re : Teleomorph of Dendrostilbella smaragdina ?
Here is the BLAST for iNat 188663364:
https://mycomap.com/genetics/blast-search/-r403357/

You can download the FASTA file from this page. When you run a BLAST on MycoMap, you can use the iNat number as the query; that's how I obtained this BLAST.

Re : Teleomorph of Dendrostilbella smaragdina ?
I could extract it, from the xml file by renaming to txt. No idea how to open it. t has 1 nt difference to all other sequences of that species, perhaps an American deviation. Perhaps I can get the hiddne coordinates and finder name.
