Teleomorph of Dendrostilbella smaragdina ?
Francois Guay, 29-08-2025 05:16

I think I may have found the teleomorph of Dendrostilbella smaragdina.

It was growing on decaying conifer wood, next to the Dendrostilbella smaragdina anamorph.

Spores: 5.8–8.95 × 2.92–3.58 µm

Asci: 8-spored, IKI+, with croziers

Here is the iNaturalist link for photos: https://www.inaturalist.ca/observations/309564369

Has anyone else seen this species?

Thanks!

Very interesting case! I read in Seifert

that he wanted to describe the teleomorph in Claussenomyces.

In GenBank I find several iNaturalist ITS sequences of D. smaragdina which give this Blast result:

ITS: 97.3% Dendrostilbella sp. CA01, 94% Phialocephala virens, 90% Clauss. kirschsteinianus.

I will do a phylotree with these and come back soon.

Here is now the interesting result. With strong support D. smaragnida falls in a clade with what I call Resinomyces. But this group has always inamyloid asci, so I doubt if your fungus is the teleomorph.

Very interesting! Thanks, Zotto, for making this phylotree. This fungus could be something else entirely. I have seen another observation of D. smaragdina with these teal asco right next to it. Based on the microscopy, do you have any idea what genus it could be? I am sending it for sequencing and will keep you updated.

Re : Teleomorph of Dendrostilbella smaragdina ?
Oh you saw it twice! My idea was a Hyphodiscaceae, but that is a pure guess. Hyphodiscus smaragdinus has a somehow similar colour but of course tuberculate hairs.

Re : Teleomorph of Dendrostilbella smaragdina ?
Nice! It does look very similar to some Hyphodiscaceae. Thank you, Zotto, now we just need to wait for the DNA sequencing results!
