What on Alnus catkins?
Marja Pennanen, 04-09-2009 22:52
Fruitbodies 0,1 to 0, 3 mm wide.
Spores 9-2 x 2-3 and asci 60-75x8-9 micrometers.
Paraphyses 3-4 micrometers wide, bend and a little swollen on the top.

Hi Marja

The micros (do you mean 9-12 for the spores?) might tell for Calycellina alniella, but the apothecia are a bit small. Did you look for the asci, are they constantly 8-spored? There exists a 4-spored species on Alnus catkins.

Any contents in the living paraphyses? Spore contents?

Re:What on Alnus catkins?
Greetings Zotto,
the asci are 8-spored, spores about 9-12x2-3 micrometers when fresh.
With my simple microscope I can't see more.
The fruitbody measurements are not very accurate, they are done with a ruler...

Re:What on Alnus catkins?
I usually also measure with a ruler, but not rarely I measure the apos on the photos because I mostly use a fix zoom.

So with 8-spored asci I would consider Calycellina alniella as probable, although the apothecia look not very typical. Without detailed microscopic images we cannto say more, sorry.

Re:What on Alnus catkins?
Hi Marja,
Macroscopically it looks to me also not as Caycellina, i think about Allophylaria, there is a still undescribed species on Alnus catcins. Is the excipulum very gelatinised? (If you make a squash mount all the inner tissue is pushed out and the excipulum is persistent, see image)
