Sebastien BassoHello, I'm conducting a mycological inventory in
Hello,
I wonder if this one could be an Arnium? Ik could only find young asci. The other ones I pushed down, sorry. The only thing is that the spores are really big, I think. The measure is 32-36x20-25 um. At the top of the frb are some at setae looking subjects ( I don't know the right word).
Maybe some of you know if I'm thinking right, but it could also be something else.
greetings Hannie

I'm sure that this is not a species of Arnium.
The immature spores (pict. 4) are typical for the genus Podospora.
At some of your pictures one can also see a pedicel (pict. 6).
With this hair tufts, the 8-spored asci and this spore size it reminds me a little bit of
Podospora prethopodalis Cain.
A species, I don't know from Europe.
But for determination you should show more features!
What about the gelatinous appendages?
Do the asci have an apical ring?
And some more.
All in all an interesting species, I think.
Regards Norbert
Hello Norbert,
Thans for ansering, I doubted between Arnium (because of the "hais") and Podospora (because of the pedicel). I looked for gel aroud the spores but I couldn't see some of it. I didn't look for an apical ring Because I only saw young asci. I saw a few frb more on the dung. so I can put a new one under the bino. Can you tel mee what I have to look for?
I think it's a new one in Holland.
greetings Hannie

"Can you tell me what I have to look for?"
Size of the appendages, the hair tufts and the asci.
And much more.
Look at Lundqvist, Doveri and others - then you'll see, what I mean.
And you should use Indian Ink.
By the way, are you sure that you show only one species?
The best would be, to dry some material and send it to me.
I'd be very interested to look at it.
Best wishes
Norbert
Hello Norbert,
I think I had only one species.
I'm glad you want take a look at it. I'll dry the material so I can send it to you. Can you give me an adress to sent to. I'm curious what it can be.
Thanks a lot,
Greetings Hannie

Althought there were only few perithecia with intact ascospores I can say with certainty that your fungus is
Podospora excentrica Lundq.
Exemplary for this species are
- the small perithecia (own measurements 400-450 x 300-350, neck 100 x 100 µm),
- the long fascicles of agglutinated hairs (up to 250 x 60 µm),
- the biseriate asci without apical ring
- and the inaequilateral ascospores (31-36 x 18-22 µm) with short pedicel, which is bent to the flat side.
There are only few species in the genus with prominent hair fascicles and 8 - spored asci like the related Podospora prethopodalis and P. bicornis.
I'll add a picture of a perithecium and some typical ascospores.
Regards
Norbert
Hello Norbert,
Thank you very much for the work you did with it. I'm happy to know the right name for this one.
I wish you a happy holliday.
Thanks again. Greetings Hannie
