Coelomycete with muriform conidia on bud scales of Abies balsamea
David Malloch, 03-05-2021 18:44
David Malloch
Hello everyone,

I have been finding this fungus every year for more than 10 years and have never found a name for it. In my files I have called it Camarosporium sp., but that is clearly incorrect.

The fungus produces conidiomata on the previous season's bud scales of Abies balsamea. It is very common on older trees along the coast of the Bay of Fundy in New Brunswick. It is mature in May-June but can be found as early as January.

The conidiogenous system is hyphal and fills the centrum as a loose tangled mass. The conidiogenous cells are produced on this system and appear to be phialides. The conidia are ovoid, brown and muriform. Germination on DPYA is by continuous budding and never develops a hyphal colony.

Is anyone here familiar with this fungus?

David

Hi David,

Your fungus has similarities with the illustration of Pseudocanalisporium circumfecundum from "The Genera of Hyphomycetes". Maybe this will help you.

best regards,
Thorben

Hi Thorben,

You are right, the conidia of Pseudocanalisporium are very similar to those of my collections. However, my fungus produces a distinct wall surrounding the conidia, which does not seem to occur in Pseudocanalisporium. I'm afraid I will still need to search further for an appropriate name.

Thanks very much for pointing out the reference.
