Mold on Agaricus xanthodermus
Byrain, 18-11-2012 21:36
I found this mold growing on a old and dried out Agaricus xanthodermus in CA, USA on 10-28-2012.  Could this be a Trichoderma?  And can anyone id it to species with the information avaiable?  If not, what other information could help?  I'm very new to working with these things, thanks for looking. :)

The conidia possibly had faint ornamention, as did sections of the hyphae, the conidia was 3 - 4 um and the average was 3.05.  No clamps or reaction with melzers were observed.

Re : Mold on Agaricus xanthodermus
Good evening,

This looks like a species of Penicillium to me.  Penicillium brevicompactum commonly grows on defunct agarics but has smooth conidiophores, unlike the roughened ones in your material, which remind me more of P. aurantiogriseum.  It seems to be a member of the sugbenus Penicillium, which is thoroughly monographed by Samson & Frisvad http://www.cbs.knaw.nl/publications/CBSPublicationDetails.aspx?Rec=1049?.

Hi,

Thank you for the information and for the amazing link, I looked quickly at the pdfs, but much of it went over my head.  It will take some time to study them enough to attempt an identification, especially since I do not currently have the skills or materials to make a culture or many of the chemicals that seem to make the identification process easier. :)

I would like a copy of this publication - the URL has been changed since then. I am working on a similar Penicillium. Thanks!
