Anamorph with long-necked pycnidium
Marcus Yeo, 25-07-2022 19:50
I am baffled by this anamorph. It looks distinctive but I've been unable to put a name to it.

It was growing on decaying plant material on a cliff ledge at 530m alt in the English Lake District. Substrates appeared to include grass stems & leaves (probably Festuca sp), petioles of Alchemilla alpina leaves and bryophytes.

The pycnidia are superficial, with a swollen base ca 150-200 µm wide & a long neck (up to 700 µm). A notable feature is that the conidia are extruded through the neck in a long persistent cylinder. Conidia are ellipsoid, hyaline, 0-septate & 4-5 x 3 µm.

Any help would be very welcome.

Marcus

Hi Marcus,

I remember something very similar to this, with an ascus-like cylinder full of conidia, posted on this forum; I think it was on ferns but I can't remember what the ID was! Perhaps this will jog somebody's memory!

Best wishes,

Charles.

This looks a lot like an ascomycete. Have you checked the very young structures to see if they contain spherical asci or indications of conidiogenesis?

Re : Anamorph with long-necked pycnidium
I'm fairly certain the spores were formed at the apex of short, hyaline conidiogenous cells - but I forgot to take a picture of this!

Re : Anamorph with long-necked pycnidium
The long cirri of conidia remind me of the anamorph of Anisomeridium polypori. The long neck excludes that species but possibly a different Anisomeridium. Just an idea.

Anisomeridium is a very good suggestion!
