I usually use small amount of LACB to not overstain the preparate. When I suspected a species with loosening perisp. but it didn't show it even after gentle heating, I added a drop of lactic acid and then it loosened all right (after more heating or without, I don't remember). Pure LA is very viscous and goes rather slowly into the solution, I usually have to lift the edge of the coverslip a bit to help it overflow the section. And S. mirabilis preparate was not heated at all, but I left it overnight and the perisp. loosened too. I don't have any exper. with phenol, though.
