Hyphomycete with camphor-like smell
Bernard Declercq, 09-03-2022 18:11
Bernard DeclercqGood evening,

This one was collected on a decayed decorticated branch of Quercus robur.
Colonies effuse, first brown, then forming a pale greyish layer composed of whitish slimy heads, which tend to merge, with about 200 µm long inconspicous sterile conidiophores protruding above that layer, The hyphomycete has a strong camphor-like smell.
Conidiophores erect, up to 350 µm long, septate, middle brown, with sterile upper part; lower part sparsely branched. Branches with determinate phialide with mostly slightly recurved tip.
Conidia inequilateral fusoid to slightly curved, 20-24x3.5-4 µm, guttulate, smooth-walled, hyaline, without cilia.
I think  we have to look for somewhere in the anamorphic Chaetosphaeraceae.

Bernard

Hi Bernard,

That smell reminds me of Scytinostroma portentosum (Basidiomycota).

Cheers,

Guy

Re : Hyphomycte with camphor-like smell
Hi Bernard

This is the anamorph of Chaetosphaeria pulviscula (Menispora caesia). I've never noticed that it has a camphor smell, but then I have a very bad sense of smell!

Re : Hyphomycete with camphor-like smell
should the conidia not be ornamented with apical cilia in Menispora caesia?

cheers

Re : Hyphomycete with camphor-like smell
One of the distinguishing features of Menispora caesia is the absence of setulae on the conidia, in contrast to e.g. Menispora ciliata.

I agree with Marcus - here is M. caesia:

Yes, I relied on my memory. A bad idea :-)

Thanks to Guy, Marcus, Thomas and Chris for their reaction.
The unusual strong smell remains a mystery to me. Former collections did not have that smell. Could be caused by some other fungus although I did not observe anything in the vicinity.
