Calycina on Picea abies
Stefan Jakobsson, 10-04-2022 00:51
On a splinter of pretty hard Picea wood one meter above the snowbed I found this fungus. The scattered, shortly stipitate discs are up to 0.3 mm diameter, withish - yellowish and finally with a slight brownish tint. It has apically rounded smooth hairs. Asci are small 21-34 × 4.0-5.5 µm. Also the spores are small (4.1) 4.7 - 6.4 (6.9) × (1.5) 1.8 - 2.3 (2.5) µm, alive I suppose, in ammoniacal CR on average 4.9 × 1.6 µm. Other details in the photos.

Calycina venceslai is apparently somewhere along these lines but has bigger asci and spores. So what could this be?

Hello Stefan!

Have you seen a reaction with the paraphysis/hair-content with IKI?
I think, it could be Ciliolarina (may be neglecta).

Best wishes Ingo W

Re : Calycina on Picea abies
Right, I found the the missing granules - but only in MLZ and CRB. I did not see any colour change of hairs and prafyses with IKI.

This seems to be a difficult genus...

Hello Stefan

Here you can see the reaction of the vacuoles from Ciliolarina neglecta with IKI:

Yes, I looked at that but I did not observe the same reaction.
